St. Zoilus of Cordova is commemorated on June 27 in the Roman Martyrology alongside nineteen fellow martyrs who courageously gave their lives for Christ during one of the fiercest persecutions of the early Church.

According to ancient tradition, St. Zoilus was the son of a nobleman from Cordova, Spain. Raised in the Christian faith from childhood, he remained steadfast in his love for Christ and suffered martyrdom while still very young. His relics were later discovered, honored with the construction of a church, and eventually translated to a Benedictine abbey by order of Count Fernando in the eleventh century.

Fr. Alban Butler recounts the fascinating history surrounding St. Zoilus, his relics, and the enduring witness of the early Spanish martyrs whose sacrifice strengthened the Church through centuries of persecution.
