Discover the Miracle of the Archangel Michael at Chonae, near ancient Colossae, and what it reveals about prayer, spiritual warfare, healing, gratitude, and the unseen world.

According to tradition, a pagan father dreamed that Saint Michael instructed him to bring his mute daughter to a miraculous spring. After drinking its water, she was healed. The entire family believed in Christ, received Baptism, and built a church in thanksgiving.

When enemies attempted to destroy the church by diverting two rivers toward it, the caretaker Archippus prayed for Saint Michael’s intercession. The Archangel appeared, struck the earth, and opened a great chasm that swallowed the floodwaters, preserving the holy place.

Modern society often dismisses such accounts because it accepts only what can be observed materially. Yet every Sunday Christians profess belief in God as Creator of all things “visible and invisible.”

This homily explains that human life is fundamentally relational. Created in the image of the Triune God, we discover our purpose by loving God with our whole heart, soul, and mind—and our neighbor as ourselves.

Prayer engages the unseen world. Our moral choices are not merely about being respectable; they shape who we are becoming. Through Baptism, we carry the treasure of divine life in earthen vessels. Every act of forgiveness, self-denial, prayer, and charity conforms us more closely to Christ.

The healed family also teaches us to give thanks. The Eucharist—whose name means thanksgiving—is the Church’s supreme offering of gratitude.

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us, protect the Church, and lead us more deeply into Christ’s healing love.
