“Secularism has stolen from us the Good Samaritan.”

Modern culture often reduces Christ’s parable to philanthropy, altruism, activism, and vague compassion.

But how did the Fathers of the Church understand it?

In this sermon, the wounded traveler represents fallen humanity, robbed of sanctifying grace and wounded by sin, sensuality, and pride.

The Good Samaritan is Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh, who comes to rescue and heal mankind.

The inn represents the Catholic Church, and the medicines applied to the wounded man symbolize the sacraments, through which Christ heals souls.

But Our Lord’s command remains:

“Go and do likewise.”

That means genuine Catholic compassion is not merely affirming people or avoiding difficult conversations. It means bringing wounded souls the truth that can heal them.

The sermon applies this especially to Catholics who have lost knowledge of the Faith, forgotten the seriousness of sin, misunderstood the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, or lost awareness of the Real Presence of Christ in the tabernacle.

True mercy seeks the salvation of souls.

And the final challenge is unforgettable:

“There is only one tragedy in life—and that is not to be a saint.”
