St. Germanus of Constantinople, commemorated on May 12, was one of the great defenders of Holy Orthodoxy during the Iconoclast controversy. Born in Constantinople in the 7th century, St. Germanus endured persecution from an early age after his father was executed by the emperor Constantine Pogonatos. Sent to a monastery, the young saint devoted himself to Holy Scripture, prayer, and the ascetic life.

Because of his holiness and wisdom, he became bishop of Cyzicus and later Patriarch of Constantinople. During the rise of the Iconoclast heresy, St. Germanus courageously defended the veneration of holy icons against Emperor Leo III the Isaurian. Refusing to compromise the Orthodox Faith, he resigned rather than betray sacred tradition. The emperor’s soldiers violently expelled the saint from the patriarchal residence, yet St. Germanus remained steadfast until his repose in 740 at the age of 95.

St. Germanus also left behind important theological writings, commentaries on the Divine Liturgy, explanations of difficult passages of Scripture, hymns, and defenses of the holy icons that were later read at the Seventh Ecumenical Council in 787.
