St. Rictrudes, Abbess (12 May), is one of the great holy women of early medieval France — a noblewoman, widow, abbess, and mother of saints. Born in Gascony in 614, St. Rictrudes married Adelbald, a powerful lord at the court of King Clovis. Together they raised four children who all became saints. After the tragic assassination of her husband, Rictrudes turned completely toward God, resisting pressure from King Clovis II to remarry. Under the guidance of St. Amand, she embraced the religious life and founded a monastery at Marchiennes, where she served as abbess for forty years.
Her life was marked by prayer, fasting, contemplation, humility, and profound longing for Heaven. The story of St. Rictrudes reminds us that holiness within a family can spread grace across generations.
