Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò has sharply condemned two bishops and a Vatican representative for participating in a Pachamama ceremony in Cusco, Peru, preparing for Pope Leo XIV's upcoming visit with cocoa leaves, food offerings, and an altar to Mother Earth. Viganò questions whether any meaningful Catholic identity remains within the Church's leadership, calling the event an active pagan rite and a betrayal of the First Commandment.
The ceremony echoes the 2019 Pachamama controversy under Pope Francis, when similar idols were brought into St. Peter's Basilica. Viganò also points to a 1995 photograph showing then-Father Robert Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV, participating in a similar ritual. The Vatican has not responded to inquiries about the earlier ceremony.
Viganò's statement is a renewed challenge to the Catholic hierarchy over its involvement with indigenous religious rituals. The latest ceremony raises urgent questions about the Church's direction and fidelity to Catholic teaching.
