On August 31st, the Church commemorates St. Cyprian, Bishop of Carthage (c. 200–258 AD), one of the greatest early Church Fathers and a steadfast martyr for Christ.

Born into a wealthy pagan family in Carthage, North Africa, Cyprian excelled as an orator and teacher of rhetoric. Despite worldly success, he longed for truth and meaning. Influenced by the presbyter Caecilius, Cyprian embraced Christianity, distributed his wealth to the poor, and was baptized at the age of 46.

Soon after, he was ordained priest and then unanimously chosen as Bishop of Carthage (248 AD). As shepherd of the Church, he worked tirelessly to strengthen Christian unity, combat heresies, care for the sick during plague, and guide the faithful during fierce persecutions.

Cyprian’s writings—over 80 letters and several treatises—defend the unity of the Church, the importance of repentance, and the power of divine grace. His works were so influential that they were later cited at the Councils of Ephesus and Chalcedon.

In 258 AD, during the reign of Emperor Valerian, Cyprian was arrested and condemned to death for refusing to sacrifice to pagan idols. With calm and faith, he gave thanks to God and was beheaded, sealing his witness to Christ with his blood.

Today, St. Cyprian is honored as a pillar of the early Church, a defender of unity, and a model of courage and pastoral love.

By sharing in the ways of the Apostles, you became a successor to their throne. Through the practice of virtue, you found the way to divine contemplation, O inspired one of God; by teaching the word of truth without error, you defended the Faith, even to the shedding of your blood.
