On August 31, the Church commemorates Saint Aidan, the humble and holy bishop who evangelized Northumbria with the help of King Oswald. Originally from Ireland and a monk of Iona, Saint Aidan was chosen by the Scottish clergy for his gentleness and wisdom after others failed to convert the Anglo-Saxons.

Appointed bishop, he established his seat at Lindisfarne, also called Holy Island, where he founded a monastery in 635 AD. His mission became the foundation of Christianity in northern England.

Saint Aidan was known for his humility, piety, fasting, love of the poor, and Apostolic zeal. He distributed gifts to the needy, redeemed captives, corrected kings, and led his clergy and laity by example. Even the people adopted his custom of fasting on Wednesdays and Fridays until the afternoon.

After 17 years of tireless work, he died on August 31, 651, at Bamburgh. His relics were enshrined at Lindisfarne, and his memory is honored in the Roman Martyrology.
