Why do we sometimes return to the same sins—even after making a sincere confession?
In this powerful Catholic sermon, we contemplate Our Lady of Sorrows, the raising of the widow’s son at Nain, the danger of habitual and relapsing sin, and the spiritual battle that often begins immediately after confession.
The young man carried outside the city represents a soul dead through mortal sin. Yet the tears of his grieving mother move the Sacred Heart of Jesus to mercy. In the same way, the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Church continually intercede for sinners who have fallen away from God.
Drawing upon Sacred Scripture and the teachings of St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Alphonsus Liguori, St. Bernard, St. Jerome, St. John Vianney and other saints, this sermon explains why repeated sin weakens the soul, how the devil attempts to regain control, and why true repentance must lead to conversion and amendment of life.
Confession restores the life of grace, but it is also the beginning of a new battle. Christians must prepare for temptation, avoid occasions of sin, establish habits of virtue and persevere until death. The struggle may initially feel like thorns, but through grace, prayer and faithful resistance, those thorns can eventually become roses.
If someone you love has abandoned the Faith or is living in serious sin, do not lose heart. Entrust that person to Our Lady of Sorrows and continue praying for his or her conversion.
