St. Euphemia, Virgin & Martyr (16 September): Butler's Lives of the Saints

Discover the inspiring life and martyrdom of Saint Euphemia of Chalcedon, a virgin and martyr commemorated on September 16.

Saint Euphemia suffered during the persecution of Christians that continued under the successors of Emperor Diocletian around AD 307. Consecrated to God in holy virginity, she rejected earthly pleasures and devoted herself to prayer, penance, humility, charity and the pursuit of Christian perfection.

Euphemia’s remarkable sanctity provoked the fury of the persecutors. She was arrested and subjected to cruel torture by order of the judge Priscus. According to an ancient description by Saint Asterius, one soldier pulled back her head while another struck her mouth with a mallet, covering her face, hair and clothing with blood.

After enduring further torments, Euphemia was cast into a dungeon, where prayer became her comfort, joy and strength. When she was finally condemned to be burned alive, she approached martyrdom with extraordinary peace and holy joy, knowing that she was going to eternal life with Jesus Christ.

Saint Euphemia became one of the most honored martyrs of the Eastern Church. The great church dedicated to her at Chalcedon later hosted the Fourth Ecumenical Council in AD 451, which condemned the errors of Eutyches. The council fathers acknowledged her heavenly intercession and the assistance it provided during their defense of the true Faith.

Emperors, patriarchs and pilgrims traveled to Chalcedon seeking her patronage, and numerous miracles were attributed to her intercession. Her relics were later translated to Constantinople, where they were preserved despite persecution from iconoclast rulers.

Saint Euphemia’s life challenges every Christian to place God above comfort, pleasure, popularity and even life itself.
