Experience the Sept 12 reading from Father Alban (Albin) Butler’s Lives of the Saints on St. Ailbe (Albius/Albeus) of Emly, honored as the chief patron of Munster in Ireland. Converted by Britons and said to have traveled to Rome before St. Patrick’s arrival, Ailbe became Patrick’s fellow laborer and was ordained first Archbishop of Munster, fixing his see at Emly (later transferred to Cashel).

With commanding authority, holiness of life, and miracles confirming the Gospel, St. Ailbe won countless souls—forming not just Christians but saints. Granted the Isle of Aran by King Aengus, he founded a renowned monastery so holy the island was called “Aran of the Saints.” His monastic rule (attested in Old Irish) and love of contemplation shaped generations. In old age he longed for solitude—even to the far north (“Thule”)—but remained with his flock and died in 525, faithful to his charge.
