On September 12, the Church commemorates Saint Autonomus (Autonomos)—a bishop from Italy who fled the persecution under Emperor Diocletian and continued preaching the Gospel with fearless zeal. Resettling in Bithynia (near Serus/Serres), he gathered many converts and consecrated a temple in honor of the Archangel Michael. He first ordained Cornelius a deacon, then presbyter, and later bishop.

After evangelizing in Claudiopolis on the Black Sea and the vicinity of Limna, a pagan backlash erupted. During the Divine Liturgy, pagans stormed the church and martyred St. Autonomus, staining the altar with his blood. The Deaconess Maria lovingly recovered his body and buried him. In the reign of St. Constantine the Great, a church rose over his tomb. Years later, the saint’s relics were found incorrupt, and another church was built to honor him.
