Byzantine Saints: Saint Eulogius, Archbishop of Alexandria (13 February)

St. Eulogius of Alexandria, commemorated on February 13th, was one of the great enlightened hierarchs of the 6th century. Before becoming Patriarch of Alexandria in 579, he served as igumen of the Monastery of the Mother of God in Antioch. For 27 years, he shepherded the Church during a time of intense theological conflict.
A fearless defender of Orthodox Christology, St. Eulogius vigorously opposed heresies and clearly taught the doctrine of the two natures of Our Lord Jesus Christ — fully God and fully man. His theological writings were later quoted by St. Photius, preserving his legacy as a champion of apostolic truth.
He was also a close friend of St. Gregory the Great (St. Gregory Dialogos), and portions of their correspondence still survive today — a powerful witness to the unity of the Church during turbulent times.
Though most of his writings have been lost, one complete Palm Sunday sermon remains, revealing the depth of his orthodoxy and pastoral heart.
St. Eulogius reposed in 607 or 608, leaving behind a legacy of courage, clarity, and unwavering defense of the Faith.
May his steadfast witness inspire us to defend the fullness of Catholic truth in our own generation.
