Fr. John Anthony tried to arm wrestle God into letting him become a doctor, and the only prayer that finally brought him peace was the craziest one he could think of. A Highland Park kid turned Virginia Military Institute graduate, Navy officer, and printing equipment salesman who fired his own boss, he went on a pilgrimage to Medjugorje, surrendered the whole plan, and spent his first two years as a Catholic running medical supplies into Bosnia during the war. He joined the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal at 32, and today he lives and works among the poor, with a Peacemaker rosary in his pocket made with bullets for each of the “Our Fathers.”

Fr. John Anthony is back with the BeatiDudes for this throwback, and he brought Brother Jan along to the Tiny Table with Paul Kolker, Nick Bezner, and Jeff Schiefelbein. The heart of the conversation is forgiveness: why it is a choice of the will and not a feeling, why you forgive the person without excusing the act, and the 33 days of forgiveness homework that took a woman ready to leave her husband of 35 years to the warmest hug he had given her in a decade. He was still a rat, but now they had something to work with. For men who feel anxious, bitter, or like everyone else got the memo on happiness, he offers two questions that cut through the noise: Who are you, and where are you going?
