The parable of the Good Samaritan is far more than a lesson about helping strangers. The Fathers of the Church saw within it a profound image of the entire history of man’s fall, redemption in Jesus Christ, the sacraments, and the Catholic Church.

The man traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho represents humanity in Adam, leaving the state of innocence and falling through original sin. The robbers represent the powers of darkness, stripping man and leaving him spiritually wounded and unable to save himself.

The priest and Levite signify the inability of the Old Law alone to heal fallen humanity. Then comes the true Good Samaritan: Jesus Christ Himself, moved with compassion for wounded mankind.

Christ pours wine and oil upon the wounds—signifying divine grace and the sacraments. He carries the wounded man to the inn, which the Fathers identify with Holy Mother Church, where souls receive healing and strength.

The two pence represent the two great commandments: love of God and love of neighbor.

And the Samaritan promises to return—pointing toward Christ’s return and our journey to the heavenly Jerusalem.
