The lower house of parliament in Uruguay has approved a measure to legalize euthanasia. The proposal now moves to the Senate, which is expected to approve it by the end of the year. If passed, Uruguay would become the third Latin American country to legalize assisted suicide, joining Colombia and Ecuador. Uruguay’s Catholic bishops have spoken out in a statement, saying: “For God, every life is infinitely loved and worthy of our full care.” They added: “Our society must welcome, protect, and accompany every person until the end of their earthly life.” Roberto Rojas, Director of Latino Outreach and United Nations Representative at National Right to Life, joins to discuss his reaction to the advancement of the proposal, what is expected to happen, and whether other countries could follow suit.
