Byzantine Saints: Saint Quiricus and his mother Julitta (15 July)

Saints Quiricus (Cyricus, Kyrikos) and Julitta are commemorated on July 15. Their inspiring witness reminds Christians that true courage is measured not by age but by faithfulness to Christ.
During the fierce persecution of Emperor Diocletian, the noble Christian widow Saint Julitta fled with her three-year-old son Saint Quiricus (also known as Cyricus or Kyrikos). Arrested and brought before the pagan governor Alexander, Julitta boldly confessed Christ despite brutal torture.
As his mother suffered, little Quiricus cried out that he too was a Christian. Enraged, the governor hurled the child down the stone steps of the tribunal, making him one of Christianity's youngest martyrs. Julitta rejoiced that her son had received the crown of martyrdom before she herself was beheaded for refusing to sacrifice to idols.
Their relics were later discovered during the reign of Emperor Constantine the Great, and churches dedicated to these holy martyrs spread throughout the Christian world. Today they are honored especially as powerful intercessors for families and for the healing of sick children.
Their lives remain a moving testimony that the grace of Christ strengthens even the weakest to conquer the world.
