Are we faithful tenants of God’s vineyard—or do we live as though His gifts belong entirely to us? This Catholic homily reflects on Christ’s parable of the wicked tenants and challenges us to return to God the full harvest of our hearts.
The owner carefully planted his vineyard, built a fence, prepared a winepress, constructed a protective tower, and entrusted everything to tenants. When the harvest arrived, however, those tenants acted as though they were the owners. They attacked the servants and eventually killed the owner’s beloved son.
Although Christ originally addressed this parable to those who rejected Him, its warning also speaks directly to us. God has entrusted each of us with a vineyard:
Our household
Our parish and the Church
Our talents and material resources
Our time and daily responsibilities
Most especially, our own soul
Everything we possess is a gift and manifestation of God’s love. Our abilities, opportunities, families, homes, possessions, and even every breath have been entrusted to us so that we may cultivate His Kingdom and bear spiritual fruit.
God does not merely ask for a small portion of our lives. He desires the whole heart—undivided, faithful, and willing to make heroic sacrifices.
This homily explores:
The pain and danger of ingratitude
Christ’s parable of the wicked tenants
Why we are stewards rather than owners
The household, Church, and soul as God’s vineyard
What God expects from those who receive His gifts
Giving God an undivided heart
The heroic sacrifices required by genuine love
Saint Isaac the Syrian on repentance
Sanctifying ordinary life through prayer and fasting
Using our talents to build God’s Kingdom
Thanksgiving as the foundation of faithful stewardship
Bearing beautiful fruit for the glory of God
Let us thank God for our breath, food, shelter, loved ones, faith, and the opportunity to worship Him. Through thanksgiving, we begin to recognize the immense vineyard He has placed in our hands.
Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory forever!
