Easter Sunday Mass with Pope Leo at the Vatican opened with a unique rite recalling St. Peter's witness of the Resurrection at the empty tomb.
Two deacons open the doors of the icon of the Most Holy Savior. Another deacon then sings to the assembly: "The Lord has risen from the tomb, who for us hung upon the tree."
The faithful respond with the triple alleluia.
Turning to the Holy Father, the deacon then sings: "Yes, it is true. The Lord has risen and had appeared to Simon."
Another response of the triple alleluia is sung. The Holy Father then venerates the Icon and incenses the image of Christ, the Most Holy Savior.
