On May 4th, the Church honors St. Florian of Lorch, a Roman officer who courageously gave his life for Christ during the persecution under Emperor Diocletian.

According to Butler’s Lives of the Saints, St. Florian held a high administrative position in Noricum (modern Austria). When Christians were being persecuted, he boldly surrendered himself, professing his faith without fear.

He endured brutal torture—flogging, being flayed alive—and was ultimately thrown into the River Enns with a stone tied around his neck, sealing his martyrdom. A pious woman later recovered his body, and his relics became a source of devotion across Central Europe.

St. Florian is venerated as a powerful intercessor against fire and water, and is especially honored in Poland and Austria.
