Michael Matt is editor of The Remnant, the foremost traditionalist Catholic newspaper in the United States. It's worth taking a moment to look at the antecedents of The Remnant, because its parent newspaper was The Wanderer, of which Michael's father, Walter, was editor.
Michael's uncle—Walter's brother—was Alphonse Matt. The reason we mention him is that Walter and Alphonse, as brothers, fell out theologically over the significance and role of the Second Vatican Council. The family became a microcosm of the Catholic Church in the late 20th century.
The way the Council is understood, and the distinction between what some people call the Council itself and the “spirit” of the Council—that is, the content of the Council’s thinking and the culture in which it has been applied—has created a division within Catholicism.
Whichever side of the boundary you find yourself on, Michael brings to the analysis of the present state of Catholicism a degree of insight, commitment and expertise. At the end of this month, he is convening the Catholic Identity Conference in Pittsburgh, at which some of the most influential Catholic voices in the world have been invited to speak.
