St. Lietbert of Cambrai, also known as Liber, Liberto, or Leber, was a holy bishop of the eleventh century renowned for his courage, pastoral zeal, and unwavering devotion to Christ and His Church.

Born into a noble family of Brabant, Lietbert was educated by his uncle, Bishop Gerard of Cambrai, and faithfully served the Church before being elected bishop in 1051. Confirmed by Emperor St. Henry III, he became a true shepherd of souls, tirelessly defending his flock against oppression while caring for their spiritual welfare.

In 1054, St. Lietbert undertook a perilous pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Despite numerous obstacles, dangerous conditions, and repeated setbacks, he demonstrated remarkable perseverance. Although he never reached the Holy Land, he transformed disappointment into holiness by founding a monastery and church dedicated to the Holy Sepulchre.

Throughout his episcopacy, St. Lietbert endured persecution, imprisonment, and opposition from powerful enemies. Yet he remained steadfast in prayer, often walking barefoot to church at night and courageously defending justice. Even in his final illness, he intervened to save his city from invading forces through wisdom, courage, and faith.
