The holy martyrs were born and lived in Armenia before traveling to Italy. St. Emilian preached the Gospel to the pagans and became respected for his strict and virtuous life. He was eventually chosen as bishop and converted many souls to Jesus Christ.

Brought before Emperor Maximian, Emilian offered a striking demonstration of the power of Christian prayer. Pagan priests were unable to heal a crippled man, but after St. Emilian prayed and commanded him in the name of Jesus Christ to rise, the man stood up completely healed.

Emilian was then subjected to terrible tortures. Yet the Lord strengthened him with the words:

“Fear not, Emilian, I am with you.”

He was tied to a wheel, placed upon hot metal, thrown into a river, and exposed to wild beasts — yet remained unharmed.

Witnessing these miracles, the people cried out:

“Great is the Christian God!”

On that day, 1,000 men believed in Christ and received the crown of martyrdom.

Hilarion, Dionysius and Hermippus were later beheaded. St. Emilian also received the martyr’s crown after praying that God would grant him martyrdom.
