From The Lives of the Saints by Father Alban Butler comes the remarkable story of Blessed James of Savigliano, a Dominican preacher, professor, man of prayer, and fearless servant of the Catholic Faith.

Born in Savigliano in Piedmont in 1395, James was known for his personal charm and agile intelligence. After several years of marriage, he entered the Order of St. Dominic, studied at the University of Turin, and later became a professor.

His preaching throughout Piedmont brought about the conversion of many heretics, the reform of sinners, and the edification of faithful Catholics.

His favorite maxim was:

“To serve God is to reign.”

He also had written: “Salvation consists in serving God; everything else is illusion.”

Blessed James lived these words throughout his long life, devoting himself to the praise of God and the service of his neighbor. When weary of the world, he would retire to a forest near Saluzzo for periods of uninterrupted prayer.

Even after the age of 70, he accepted a difficult and dangerous mission and continued in that work for nearly 30 years.

Near death, after receiving the Last Sacraments, he pressed a crucifix to his breast and died peacefully at the extraordinary age of 100.
