Blessed Bernard Scammacca (February 16) is a powerful example of radical conversion, Dominican penance, and miraculous sanctity.
Born into a noble family in Catania, Sicily, Bernard lived a reckless and sinful youth. After being wounded in a quarrel and enduring a long recovery, he experienced a profound conversion of heart. Renouncing his former life, he entered the Order of St. Dominic, where he became known for his humility, obedience, and deep penance.
Tradition attributes many mystical gifts to Blessed Bernard: levitation during prayer, prophecy, heavenly visions, birds flocking to him, and a miraculous celestial light filling his cell. After his death in 1486, even greater wonders were reported — including the incorruption of his body and miraculous intervention preventing the theft of his relics.
His cult was officially confirmed in 1825.
