Saint Theodulus and Julian of Caesarea (17 February): Butler's Lives of the Saints

On February 17, the Church honors St. Theodulus and St. Julian of Caesarea, two heroic martyrs who bore witness to Christ during the persecutions in Palestine.
St. Theodulus was an elderly man of eminent virtue and wisdom, highly esteemed in the household of the governor of Palestine. Despite his honorable position and the governor’s personal affection for him, Theodulus chose loyalty to Christ over earthly favor. After encouraging imprisoned Christians with the example of the Egyptian martyrs, he was condemned—without trial—to be crucified. He received the sentence with joy, embracing a death that united him more closely to Our Lord.
St. Julian, a Cappadocian layman deeply respected for his virtue, arrived in Caesarea just after the execution of fellow martyrs. Moved by reverence, he kissed and embraced their bodies. For this act of devotion, he was arrested and swiftly condemned to be burned alive. With gratitude and serenity, he offered his life as a voluntary sacrifice to God.
Their courage, cheerfulness, and unwavering fidelity astonished even their executioners.
These saints remind us that true masculinity is not comfort, position, or safety — it is courage, fidelity, and love of Christ unto death.
May we have the strength to stand firm in our own battles.
