Saint Severian of Scythopolis (21 February): Butler's Lives of the Saints

On February 21st, the Church honors St. Severian of Scythopolis, a courageous bishop who gave his life defending the true Faith during the turmoil following the Council of Chalcedon (451 AD).
In the mid-5th century, the Eutychian heresy spread confusion and division throughout Palestine. Backed by imperial influence and violence, heretics seized Jerusalem and persecuted those who upheld the orthodox teaching of Christ’s two natures — fully God and fully man.
Among the few who stood firm was St. Severian, Bishop of Scythopolis. Refusing to compromise the truth, he resisted tyranny and false doctrine. For his fidelity, he was dragged from the city and brutally massacred in 452 or 453 AD.
His martyrdom reminds us of a sobering truth:
“Let him who stands beware lest he fall… Hold fast what thou hast, lest another bear away thy crown.”
Palestine — once sanctified by Christ Himself and watered by the blood of martyrs — became a warning to the world. Flourishing churches can fall. Strong believers can waver. Nations can lose the Faith.
St. Severian’s life challenges Catholic men today:
Will we stand firm when truth is unpopular?
Will we resist heresy even at personal cost?
Will we guard the Faith entrusted to us?
The same battle continues. The same crown awaits.
St. Severian of Scythopolis, pray for us.
