On February 22, the Church remembers St. Papias of Hierapolis, one of the earliest witnesses to Apostolic Tradition.

Though little is known about his life, St. Papias stands at the crossroads between the Apostles and the generation that followed them. According to St. Irenaeus, he was a disciple of St. John and a companion of St. Polycarp. Yet Papias himself writes that he did not directly hear the Apostles — but instead carefully gathered the living testimony of those who had known them.

In this episode from The Lives of the Saints by Fr. Alban Butler, we explore:

Though some of his theological views were later debated, the Church has long honored him as a saint, and the Roman Martyrology commemorates him on February 22.

May we, like St. Papias, seek not beautiful words — but the truth handed down from Christ Himself.
