Many of the Church Fathers — including St. Gregory the Great, Dorotheus of Gaza, and others — referred to Lent as “the tithe of the year.”

But what does that mean?

A tithe is 10%. In the Old Testament, Israel gave the first 10% back to God — not because 10% belonged to Him and 90% belonged to them, but because everything belongs to God.

Forty days out of 365 is just over 10% of the year.

Lent is our yearly tithe of time.

It is a sacred season where we intensify:

Prayer

Fasting

Almsgiving

Discipline

Liturgical participation

Not because we only live seriously for God during Lent — but because we need a focused season of spiritual strengthening.

But beware.

As we grow in ascetical discipline, the enemy works harder.
The devil will tempt us toward pride.
He will expose hidden passions.
He will attempt to derail our spiritual focus.

Lent is not just about giving things up.
It is about rededicating our entire lives to Christ.

This is how men become spiritually strong.
This is how families are renewed.
This is how souls are saved.
