Rome Has Spoken: The Pope Was Declared Infallible — Then Rome Fell in 64 Days

On July 18, 1870, in a thunderstorm so violent that lightning struck
the dome of St. Peter's and the bishops could barely hear the words
over the rain, the Catholic Church declared the Pope infallible.
Sixty-four days later, Italian troops blew a hole in the wall of Rome.

French garrison, the breach at Porta Pia, and the day the thousand-year
Papal States ceased to exist.
