"Exactly how was dropping the Last Gospel for the good of the Church?"
Fr. Thomas Reese, SJ published a piece titled "Why I Hate the Old Latin Mass." Michael Matt of The Remnant answers it - and turns the usual accusation inside out. It is not the traditionalists who are rejecting the Second Vatican Council.
Sacrosanctum Concilium said there were to be no changes to the liturgy unless the good of the Church or the good of the faith genuinely required them. So Matt puts the question back: which change met that standard? The genuflection at the Et Incarnatus Est? The Last Gospel? Communion in the hand? Vatican II never turned the priest around, never abolished Latin, and gave Gregorian chant pride of place. "The onus is on these guys to tell us how this is in line with Vatican II."
The second half turns pastoral. Matt is blunt that the reform was imposed rather than organically developed, and just as blunt that this is no license to judge the Catholic sitting in the pew at the Novus Ordo. "The greatest of these is charity." What follows is his case for keeping the faith as a remnant, with the catacombs as the precedent.
