Pope Leo XIV closed his catechesis on Sacrosanctum Concilium by defending the liturgical reform: the faithful, he said, needed to celebrate "more consciously and actively, not as strangers and silent spectators." Michael Matt of The Remnant has a question about that. Were the saints, martyrs, popes and virgins before 1969 not participating either?
That is the argument in this conversation, and it goes further than a complaint about tone. When St. John XXIII opened the Second Vatican Council, he explicitly denied that the Church was in crisis and condemned the prophets of doom. Pope Leo has now said the Council changed the Mass so that Catholics could finally be receptive to God's grace. Both cannot be true. Michael Matt walks through the contradiction, answers Fr. Thomas Reese's claim that traditional Catholics are simply being disobedient, and explains why he believes the traditional Latin Mass will one day be the Mass of the Church again.
Recorded live on A Catholic Take, Wednesday 26 August 2026.
