Thursday of the Third Week of Lent

In today’s powerful Lenten meditation, the Fathers of the Church—especially St. Ambrose and St. Augustine—teach a sobering truth: there are two fevers that afflict humanity.

One is the fever of the body, which weakens the flesh and leads to death.
The other is the fever of the soul, which is sin—and leads to eternal separation from God.

While bodily sickness fills cemeteries, spiritual sickness fills hell.

Yet the saints teach something surprising: God often uses bodily suffering to heal the soul.

Illness can:

detach us from sin

weaken the tyranny of the flesh

purify the soul

make our bodies a living sacrifice pleasing to God

Like St. Peter’s mother-in-law, who was healed by Christ, suffering can become the very path through which God restores us.

The question is not whether we will suffer.
The question is whether we will suffer like the good thief—or the bad thief.

During this season of Lent, we are invited to unite our pains with Christ and allow God to transform suffering into penance, purification, and eternal glory.
