St. Akakios, Bishop of Melitēnḗ, is one of the great wonderworking saints of the early Church, commemorated on April 17. Born to pious parents who had long prayed for a child, he was dedicated to God from infancy and raised in the Church under a faithful bishop.

He grew in holiness, becoming a reader, deacon, priest, and eventually bishop of Melitene. Known for his humility, strong Orthodox faith, and love for the people, St. Akakios became a spiritual father to many—including St. Euthymius the Great.

Throughout his life, God worked powerful miracles through him. During a drought, rain fell during the Divine Liturgy. When a river threatened to flood, his prayer held it back. Most astonishingly, a collapsing church dome was miraculously suspended in the air until the faithful safely exited.

St. Akakios also stood firm in defending Orthodox doctrine, participating in the Third Ecumenical Council (431), where he upheld the truth of Christ’s two natures and the honor of the Theotokos.

His life is a testimony to unwavering faith, courage, and trust in God.
