Join The CatholicTV Network for the full Daily Catholic Mass celebration on this Saturday of the Second Week of Ordinary Time, as we honor the Feast of St. Francis de Sales.
In today's encouraging Homily, Father Chris Snyder reflects on the legacy of St. Francis de Sales, a "gentle giant" of the faith who taught that true power lies in humility and simplicity. We are reminded that in a world that often values dominance and "bullying" to get one's way, the Christian call is to be gentle. The homily explores the profound grief of David—a man who, despite being the anointed successor, mourns the death of his predecessor, Saul, showing us that a heart aligned with God chooses charity over rivalry.
The Scriptures highlight the depth of human emotion and the intensity of Christ’s mission:
-The First Reading (2 Samuel 1:1-4, 11-12, 19, 23-27): Following the death of Saul and Jonathan, David and his men mourn with fasting and weeping. David’s lamentation, "How the mighty have fallen!", serves as a powerful testament to his respect for the Lord’s anointed and his deep love for his friend Jonathan.
-The Responsorial Psalm (Ps 80): A plea for divine restoration: "Let us see your face, Lord, and we shall be saved".
-The Holy Gospel (Mark 3:20-21): Jesus returns home, and the crowd gathers again in such numbers that He and His disciples "were unable even to eat". Upon hearing of His intense ministry, His relatives set out to seize Him, saying, "He is out of his mind".
May we imitate the "charity and meekness" of St. Francis de Sales today, remembering that gentleness is your true strength.
