“Terrible is this place: it is the house of God and the gate of Heaven.” This Catholic sermon commemorates the anniversary of an abbey church’s dedication and examines the sacred presence of God within His dwelling place—and within a soul transformed through loving obedience.
Drawing from Blessed Columba Marmion’s Christ, the Ideal of the Monk and Chapter Five of the Rule of St. Benedict, Father explains why obedience is among the most precious offerings we can make to God. True religious obedience is prompt, supernatural, and motivated by love rather than mere obligation.
The sermon recounts the young St. Benedict’s miraculous restoration of a broken wheat sifter. When news of the miracle spread, Benedict fled the possibility of worldly praise and entered the solitude of Subiaco, seeking only God’s will.
We also consider Christ’s own astonishing humility and obedience, followed by Dom Marmion’s parable of El Dorado. After sacrificing everything to reach an immense gold mine, would anyone leave carrying only two tiny nuggets? Religious souls have already surrendered family, careers, possessions, and personal plans. Why, then, settle for mediocrity when the treasures of obedience are within reach?
May Christ call us down from the tree of pride and dwell within our souls through grace, humility, and faithful obedience.
