Why does a priest wearing a cassock make some Catholics so angry?

For some people, the cassock represents reverence, tradition, and a priest making his vocation visible in the world.

For others, it immediately signals clericalism, arrogance, or a desire to “go backward.”

But maybe that reaction tells us something deeper.

Why do we keep forcing the Church into these either/or camps?

Tradition or renewal. Reverence or evangelization. What we have received or where the Holy Spirit is leading us.

Catholicism has room for both.

A cassock does not make a priest holy. And wearing ordinary clothes does not make a priest less faithful. But visible signs matter, and maybe instead of immediately labeling each other, we should ask why something like this creates such a strong emotional reaction in the first place.
