Blessed Rodolfo Aquaviva and his companions gave everything for Christ, even unto death.

In this reading from Father Alban Butler's The Lives of the Saints for July 27, we recount the heroic witness of Blessed Rodolfo Aquaviva, Blessed Alfonso Pacheco, Blessed Pietro Berno, Blessed Antonio Francisco, and Blessed Francisco Aranha, Jesuit missionaries martyred in Cuncolim (Kunkolim), Goa, India, in 1583.

Born into one of Italy's noble families, Rodolfo Aquaviva left wealth and privilege to join the Society of Jesus and carry the Gospel to India. After serving at the court of Emperor Akbar, he and his fellow missionaries entered the difficult mission territory of Salsette, where they met violent opposition.

Though warned of danger, they refused to abandon their mission. When attacked, they chose prayer over violence. Father Alfonso Pacheco even prevented armed resistance, declaring:

"We have not come to fight."

The missionaries died praying for those who killed them. Brother Francisco Aranha survived the initial assault only to be offered his life if he would worship an idol. He refused and was martyred the following day.

After years of investigation and debate concerning the circumstances of their deaths, Pope Benedict XIV recognized their deaths as authentic martyrdom, and they were formally beatified in 1893.

Their witness reminds Catholics that authentic evangelization is rooted in charity, courage, fidelity, and love for Christ—even when it demands the ultimate sacrifice.

May the Blessed Jesuit Martyrs of Cuncolim pray for the Church and strengthen all Christians to remain faithful unto death.
