More than two decades after its original release, Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ is returning to theatres—and the demand is overwhelming. Joe Condit began renting out a 275-seat theater in Austin, Texas, so people could experience the film together. The waiting list grew to nearly 20,000 people. The theatrical experience, he argues, is dramatically different from watching at home—and the movie has been absent from theaters for 22 years.

The re-release is timed to build anticipation for Gibson's planned sequel, The Resurrection of the Christ, expected in May 2027. Condit met with Gibson and his business partner before filming began in Italy and learned that Lionsgate and the film's promotional team are supporting the re-release to introduce the movie to a new generation.

The film that shocked the world in 2004 is coming back. Families are encouraged to return to theaters beginning September 10 to experience the Passion together—and prepare for the Resurrection. The story is not over. And the sequel is coming. The question is whether the audience that made The Passion a phenomenon will return. The answer, judging by the waiting list, is yes. The Passion is back. And it is more powerful than ever.
