There was a time when a town was a town. The hardware store knew your father. The pharmacist knew your kids by name. The diner on Main Street poured your coffee before you sat down. The little league outfield wall was painted with the names of the people who lived next door to you — Joe's Hardware, Murphy's Pharmacy, Dottie's Bakery — neighbors sponsoring neighbors, families lifting families.
That America didn't die a natural death. It was killed.
For decades, Washington has picked winners. Tax carve-outs for the connected. Bailouts for the reckless. Regulations written by lobbyists to crush the small competitor in the cradle. Subsidies, sweetheart loans, zoning favors, and trade deals engineered to enrich the few while the many were told to "learn to code" and move on.
The result is the country we see out the window: boarded storefronts, shuttered parishes, opioid-soaked towns, and gleaming distribution centers where the family farm used to be.
This is not capitalism. The free market does not bail out billionaires. The free market does not hand monopolies to multinationals while a father trying to open a bakery drowns in regulatory red-tape. What we have is corporate welfare dressed up in red, white, and blue — a managed economy that serves the powerful and grinds down the ordinary American family.
The Church has a word for what's been lost: subsidiarity. The idea, as old as the Gospel and as American as a town hall meeting, that the things closest to a person — the family, the parish, the neighborhood, the small business — should be defended, not devoured. When the big swallows the small, something more than commerce dies. Community dies. Trust dies. The bonds that make a people a people are severed, one Main Street at a time.
In this video, Mike provides a walk past what we lost, and reminds us of what we're called to rebuild. Honor your neighbor. Buy from the family down the street. Defend the small against the mighty. Trust in God, love your town, and refuse to believe the lie that bigger is better.
Main Street isn't dead yet. But she's calling out to the type of Man who feels a kinship to those old George Baileys of days gone by. Men who walk in integrity.
Pray. Buy local. Stay rooted. God bless America — and God bless the small.
NOTE TO KIDS UNDER 30: This video is presented OLD SCHOOL, as it was broadcast. No, we are not removing Mike's very intentional dramatic pauses. If you want crap content compressed into 30 second, breathless soundbites to feed your dopamine addiction, The Mike Church Show is NOT for you!
