On May 19, 2026, Thomas Massie — the representative from Kentucky's fourth congressional district who spearheaded the effort to force the Justice Department to release the Epstein files — lost his Republican primary to Ed Gallrein, 54.8% to 45.2%.
The price tag? More than $15.8 million from AIPAC a foreign unregistered agent and allied pro-Israel groups poured into ousting one congressman, in what became the most expensive House primary in American history, clocking in at $32 million total. President Donald Trump endorsed Gallrein personally, called Massie "the worst congressman in the long and storied history of the Republican party." The administration also sent Pete Hegseth to campaign against him.
So if you're keeping score, the man who pried open the Epstein documents — who voted his conscience on foreign aid, on the Iran war, on the Big Beautiful Bill — got bought out of his own seat by a foreign-policy lobby, with the blessing of the president that was supposed to stand for America First.
In Massie's own concession speech, he didn't pretend to miss what happened, stating "I would have come out sooner, but I had to call my opponent to concede, and it took a while to find Ed Gallrein in Tel Aviv."
