What can St. Lawrence teach Catholics about suffering, courage, peace, and Christian joy?

In 258 AD, during the persecution of Christians in Rome, St. Lawrence knew that martyrdom could be waiting for him. When the authorities demanded the treasures of the Church, Lawrence famously presented them with the poor. And when he was eventually condemned to a brutal death on the gridiron, tradition remembers him responding with extraordinary courage—and even humor.

But the lesson of St. Lawrence goes far beyond one famous line.

Christian joy is not pretending that suffering doesn't hurt. It isn't optimism, comfort, or having everything go according to plan. It is possessing something that circumstances cannot touch.

Your plans can collapse.
You can lose money.
People can turn against you.
Your career can disappear.
Your health can fail.
Your reputation can be taken from you.
Even your life will eventually be taken.

But Christ cannot be taken from you.

That changes everything.

In this episode, we look at St. Lawrence and the Christian understanding of joy as a form of defiance against despair. We also consider the courage of persecuted Catholics and the remarkable story of St. Eustace as reminders that suffering does not get the final word.

Three lessons stand out:

1. Stop asking circumstances for permission to have peace.

3. Remember what cannot be taken from you.

St. Lawrence reminds us why Christians should be extraordinarily difficult people to break.

The question isn't whether everything in your life will go according to plan.

It won't.

The question is: When circumstances turn against you, where does your peace come from?

If your peace comes from Christ, the world can shake you—but it doesn't have to break you.
