This powerful Catholic sermon examines the gifts of the Holy Ghost, sanctifying grace, divine charity, supernatural merit, and salvation through the teaching of St. Paul, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. Thérèse.
St. Paul speaks of extraordinary gifts of the Holy Ghost: prophecy, miracles, healing, tongues, interpretation, knowledge, and the discernment of spirits. These charismatic gifts can serve an important purpose within the Church—but are they proof that a person is holy?
The sermon draws an essential distinction between extraordinary spiritual gifts and sanctifying grace.
As St. Paul teaches in 1 Corinthians 13, even if a man possesses prophecy, knowledge, extraordinary faith, and remarkable spiritual gifts, without charity he is nothing.
“And if I should have prophecy and should know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I should have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.”
True supernatural life comes through sanctifying grace and divine charity. Extraordinary gifts may benefit others, but they do not themselves establish sanctity.
The sermon also confronts a widespread modern assumption: Is simply being a morally good person sufficient for salvation?
Using a striking comparison between a heroic firefighter and a religious performing an ordinary act under obedience, the sermon explains the Catholic distinction between the natural goodness of an action and its supernatural merit before God.
A seemingly insignificant action performed in sanctifying grace and supernatural charity can possess a value that cannot be measured merely by its outward appearance.
The message ultimately leads back to the words attributed here to St. Thérèse and her “science of love”: extraordinary accomplishments are not the ultimate measure of Christian perfection.
Charity is the more excellent way.
To love God above all things—and our neighbor for the sake of God—is the heart of the supernatural life.
