Blessed Placide Viel (1815–1877) was a humble farmer’s daughter from Normandy who became one of the most influential religious superiors of the 19th century. Chosen to succeed St. Mary Magdalene Postel, she led the Sisters of the Christian Schools of Mercy during a time of remarkable growth and expansion.

Despite internal opposition, financial difficulties, and constant travel across France, Mother Placide devoted her life to the education of poor girls, founding schools, orphanages, and charitable institutions. During her 30 years as Superior General, the congregation expanded dramatically—from 37 convents to 105, and from 150 sisters to over 1,000 religious.

Her leadership, humility, and dedication to Catholic education helped transform the lives of thousands of children. Though her life was simple and largely hidden from the world, her work strengthened Catholic education across France.

Blessed Placide Viel died on March 4, 1877, and was beatified in 1951.

Her life reminds us that sanctity often grows through humility, perseverance, and faithful service.
