Byzantine Saints: Martyrs Eutropius, Cleonicus, and Basiliscus of Amasea (3 March)

On March 3rd, the Church commemorates the heroic Holy Martyrs Eutropius, Cleonicus, and Basiliscus of Amasea, who suffered for Christ in the early 4th century in Pontus, Asia Minor.
These brave companions of St. Theodore the Recruit were imprisoned after his martyrdom and converted many pagans to the Christian faith through their preaching and unwavering courage.
Under the cruel governor Asotus, they endured savage tortures — beatings, crucifixion, boiling tar, iron hooks, salt, vinegar, and mustard rubbed into their wounds. Yet Christ Himself appeared to strengthen them.
When forced to sacrifice to Artemis, St. Eutropius prayed — and an earthquake destroyed the pagan temple. A voice from Heaven declared that a Christian church would one day stand there.
On March 3rd, Saints Eutropius and Cleonicus were crucified.
St. Basiliscus was later beheaded on May 22nd, his relics becoming a source of blessing and devotion.
Their courage reminds us:
True Christian masculinity is faithfulness under suffering.
The crown of martyrdom is eternal life in Christ.
May their prayers strengthen us to stand firm in our own trials.
