In early 19th-century Moscow, two decorated Russian generals openly ridiculed religion and denied the Catholic teaching on Hell, eternal punishment, and divine judgment. They made a pact: whichever died first would return and reveal the truth about the afterlife.
One went to war.
He never returned alive.
But he did return.
This true story from Catholic tradition confronts the reality of Hell, damnation, mortal sin, and the particular judgment that follows death. It echoes the urgent warnings of the saints — especially St. Alphonsus Liguori, Doctor of the Church, who wrote extensively about preparation for death, repentance, confession, and the danger of dying in unrepented sin.
Sacred Scripture warns us:
“You shall seek me, and shall not find me.” (John 7:34)
“Seek the Lord while He may be found.” (Isaiah 55:6)
Hell is real.
Judgment is certain.
Death comes suddenly.
The time for conversion is now.
🙏 Lenten Reflection
During this holy season of Lent, examine your conscience before God.
Is there a mortal sin you keep postponing confessing?
Are you delaying repentance, assuming you have more time?
“The time of death will not be the time to prepare ourselves to die well; to die well and happily, we must prepare ourselves beforehand.” — St. Alphonsus Liguori
Lent is a time for repentance, sacramental confession, spiritual renewal, and returning to Christ before the day of judgment.
