In today's challenging and insightful Homily, the celebrant, Liam Bergen, connects two seemingly opposite biblical themes: the unconditional assurance of God's unstoppable love and the reality of division that Christ's truth brings. Christ's peace is not a "peace of convenience or of compromise," but a higher peace "born out of the hearts of faith filled women and men".
The readings offer the courage we need to stand firm in our convictions:
The First Reading from Romans 8:31-39 is a triumphant declaration of Christian confidence: "If God is for us, who can be against us?". St. Paul assures us that absolutely nothing "will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord".
The Holy Gospel according to Luke (12:49-53) is startling, as Jesus states he came to bring "not peace... but rather division". The homily explains that the Christian message, by its nature, is "bound to provoke opposition even in families", requiring followers to have the "courage of our convictions".
Learn to live your faith with "conviction with compassion" and be a part of Christ's community, the Church.
