On February 28, the Church commemorates Hieromartyr Proterius, Patriarch of Alexandria, who gave his life defending the Orthodox teaching of Christ as Perfect God and Perfect Man.

During the turbulent 5th century, Alexandria was shaken by theological controversy. Following the condemnation of the Monophysite heresy at the Fourth Ecumenical Council of Chalcedon (451), Proterius was elevated to the patriarchal throne after the deposition of Dioscorus.

But the supporters of error did not rest.

Amid riots, political unrest, and violent opposition, St. Proterius remained steadfast in proclaiming that Christ exists in two natures — unconfused, indivisible, immutable, and inseparable.

On Holy Saturday, in an act of shocking brutality, heretics broke into a baptistry where he had taken refuge and murdered him along with six faithful companions. His body was desecrated and burned — yet his witness could not be silenced.

This is the story of a bishop who chose truth over safety, fidelity over compromise, and martyrdom over silence.

May his prayers strengthen us to defend the Orthodox faith in our own age of confusion.
