Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. faced intense scrutiny today during a Senate hearing, as criticism mounts over the firing of CDC Director Susan Monarez and recent cuts to COVID vaccine access. Calls for his resignation are growing. Before the hearing, Democratic lawmakers held a rally urging Kennedy to step down. During the hearing, Democrats zeroed in on the firing of CDC Director Susan Monarez—less than a month after she was hired. Senator Ron Wyden questioned whether she was dismissed because she wanted vaccines to be scientifically proven rather than “rubber-stamped.” Lawmakers then shifted their focus to COVID. While some Republicans praised Kennedy for his efforts, others questioned whether it was a conflict of interest to appoint panelists who are paid expert witnesses in litigation against vaccine manufacturers.
