St. Maruthas, Bishop of Martyropolis, is commemorated on February 16. A fearless defender of persecuted Christians, a brilliant theologian, and a diplomatic bridge between the Byzantine Empire and Persia, St. Maruthas stands as a powerful example of Catholic leadership in times of persecution.

Founder of Martyropolis in Mesopotamia, St. Maruthas was renowned for his knowledge, holiness, and deep devotion to Christ. He suffered under the Persian Emperor Shapur and later became instrumental in rebuilding churches destroyed during persecution.

St. Maruthas participated in the Second Ecumenical Council of Constantinople (381) against the heresy of Macedonius and attended the Council of Antioch. He preserved the acts of the Council of Nicaea (325) and authored important works in the Syriac language, including:

• Commentary on the Gospels
• The Liturgy of Maruthas
• The 73 Canons of Nicaea

As an envoy, he was sent by Emperor Theodosius II to negotiate peace with the Persian ruler, successfully securing protection and freedom for Christians in Persia. Through wisdom and courage, he persuaded the Persian Shah toward a favorable disposition toward Christians.

He also located and transferred relics of martyrs to Martyropolis, strengthening the faith of the local Church.

St. Maruthas died in 422. His relics were later transferred to Egypt and placed in a monastery dedicated to the Mother of God.

His life reminds us that true Catholic masculinity is not only bold in battle—but wise in diplomacy, steadfast in doctrine, and courageous in suffering.
